In some ways these are the antithesis of my style (frilly, pink). But I like that there's something subversive about them, like a prom dress that got dragged across the lawn.

Yesterday was also the birthday of Salvador Domingo Felipe Jacinto Dalí i Domènech, Marquis of Dalí de Púbol –
more commonly known as Salvador Dalí.
To be honest I've never been a huge fan (I'm probably just missing something) but I appreciate the opportunity to post these mesmerizing 1966 William Claxton photos of Dalí and Donyale Luna in Spain.
Dalí said he believed Luna was the reincarnation of Nefertiti.

Here are some pics from an EPIC scouting trip Emily and I took to the Olympic Peninsula last weekend.
Friday after work we took the ferry from Edmonds to Kingston and spent the night in Port Townsend, rolling in around 10pm and securing a room, then finding a bar, ordering a pizza, and watching some aging hippies in camp shirts dance to the kind of quasi-Chicago blues band that always reminds me of Buck's in Bellingham circa 1990.
On Saturday we got up early and drove the entire day, all the way up to Clallam Bay and on down the coast, with a brief stop at a Forks roadhouse for late lunch and the Kentucky Derby.

We hit almost every beach possible for about 10 minutes each, and ended up staying at a motel on Lake Quinault, across the street from the world's largest Sitka Spruce.
This is not the largest Sitka Spruce in the world.
This is one of the largest Cedar trees in the world.
Sunday we continued south through Aberdeen, Westport, Tokeland, and Raymond before heading over to Chehalis and back home.

Might not sound like much but I'm telling you...

EPIC.

My mom with my brother and me at Sequim Bay (on the Olympic Peninsula, Washington State) in I'm guessing 1982? We used to rent this cabin for the same week in June every year... I remember my parents saying it was $110 for the week or something and it was nothing short of magical. Photo by my dad.

Kraftwerk "Ruckzuck" (Live on West German TV, 1970). I have some of their later records but to be honest I had no idea Kraftwerk was around this early... like, before I was born. It makes me imagine what it is they were reacting to or against, that resulted in this sound. Fairly mind-blowing.
I'm sorry for all the video posting lately, I still stand by my opinion that it's the laziest form of blogging, but I haven't had time for more in-depth posts. Stick with us, though, big things are in the works.

L'Amour Fou, a documentary which premiered stateside at the Tribeca Film Festival last month, follows the love between Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé by chronicling the development of their legendary art collection, recently auctioned by Christie's for $480,000,000.

Attention New Yorkers:
This coming Monday, May 9th, Parsons and the Aperture Foundation will present a screening of Somewhere to Disappear, a documentary by Laure Flammarion and Arnaud Uyttenhove (oh, them) on photographer Alec Soth's "Broken Manual" project, for which he cris-crossed the country in search of people who have retreated from society (trailer above). Soth will be there to answer questions after the screening. Go here for info.

Miroslav Tichý, the Czech photographer whom I posted about last year when he had a major retrospective at the International Center of Photography in New York, died earlier this month at the age of 84.
With his homemade "trash cameras" and voyeuristic photographs of women on the street, I thought of Tichý as a sort of harmlessly lecherous, Eastern-block version of Bill Cunningham.
