Tonight Seattle gallery Vermillion celebrates its 3rd anniversary with the opening of an extremely cool-looking new show by artists Matthew Olds & Heather Joy: Flourishing Remnants collects "paintings, photography, drawings, and an installation, based on numerous greenhouses found on Vashon Island that date back to the turn of the century. The greenhouses are in various conditions and states of collapse, and some of them are being reclaimed by nature." Click here for more of the artitsts' collaborative work.

Tonight at Vermillion, Seattle's Canoe Social Club launches its inaugural issue of BrownBagMag – "a semi-quarterly celebration of arts, culture, and science, interested in the interrelationships of the arts, of art to science and the artist to society" with contributions from Rick Araluce, Maxfield Chandler, Chris Crites, Tom Dougherty, Jed Dunkerley, Charles Leggett, Jessica Levey, Sarah Lippek, Darby McDevitt, Linden Ontjes, Arne Pihl, Robert Rousseau, Erin Shafkind. Other than that, I know very little, but as I get somewhat ridiculously worked up about new publications, I am quite excited to check it out. You Have A Choice

Sunny Bono's highly convincing screed against the pot will be shown along with other old PSAs, advertisements, trailers, educational films, science films, space films, and other shorts in Vermillion's Dinner & A Movie event this coming Sunday night. The dinner: Andre Hopper, chef at Black Bottle, is preparing a whole country-cured ham from Bob's Quality Meats in Columbia City, along with mixed greens tossed in a berry vinaigrette with wine poached pears and candied walnuts, roasted garlic soup, and braised winter greens from Full Circle Farm. God dammit that sounds delicious – and the whole thing is only $20 per person. Kind of makes you wonder if Vermillion is smoking the pot.

We Built This To Leave

Today is first Thursday, and I'll leave it to/the/experts to provide surveys of what's going up in galleries around Seattle tonight – other than to say that I'm really looking forward to seeing the new show at Vermillion.

Ryan Mollenkamp The Flood – reminds me of the Skagit Valley

Last November I posted about Ryan Mollenkamp's show there, and he returns this November in a group show with Sharon Arnold and Trevor Johnson. I don't know if the three artists were responding to each other's work, but the way it all goes together is really amazing.

Something about Vermillion feels temporary to me – maybe because it seems like the gallery is always experimenting, changing its shows up a lot, not necessarily with a consistent point of view, as far as I can tell. But it is consistently good, or at the very least worth visiting. It helps that they have beer and a really delicious small menu in the back room, but I always leave Vermillion feeling inspired.

1. Closing party at Vermillion for the Headwaters of Industry show featuring Sarah Kavage & Erin Morrison.

2. Opening party for Ghost of Plants, featuring new work from Heidi Anderson, at Cairo.

Also, some Rainier tall boys. And then after that: sleep, because we're getting up early to go on our first camping trip of the season to Rialto Beach. That's near Forks, for all you Twilight fans out there (don't lie! it was kinda good).
