Let's Get Small
.
Here are some spreads from this amazing book Emily got me for Christmas, Irving Penn: Small Trades. I wrote a little previously about this series, for which Penn photographed working people in makeshift studios he set up in New York, Paris, and London.
The photos reinforce the beauty of everyday life – we all have our own life and work, whatever it is, all with our own small struggles and victories.
The juxtaposition of subjects is interesting to me, without ever being jarring. These are the things you consider when you put a book like this together.
Pentagram designed it, and the printing and binding are executed beautifully; every last detail is considered and you really feel that when you hold the book in your hands and look through it.
Small Trades is available from fine booksellers everywhere or you can order it directly from the Getty Museum. In the mean time, see images from the Getty's 2009 exhibition Irving Penn: Small Trades here.

Portfolio, a new Steidl-produced printing of Robert Frank's photography portfolio at the time he moved from Switzerland to the US, in 1947, at the age of 23. Visit steidlville to view images.
Rainydawg Radio, an underground radio station from the University of Washington. Production value very low but I was listening in my office all last night and I don't think they played a single bad song. Old and new stuff, a big variety. You can listen online – click here.
Kimberly Ovitz PF2010. Very minimal and modern, kind of one idea done a bunch of different ways. I think Emily would like this stuff, but she's under 7 million schoolbooks right now, so I'm posting it for her. Hi Em.
Wine box floor boards. The chicness...the chicness.
My favorite Land Rover, featured in a New York Times article about Land Rovers a few years back. I know, I know... I've just been thinking about these a lot lately.

I am sad to post the news that one of the greatest photographers of all time, Irving Penn, died this morning at the age of 92. Read Andy Grundberg's obituary at The New York Times – undoubtedly the first of many remembrances in days to come. Above, a 1950 Irving Penn photograph of his wife, the model and artist Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn, who died in 1992.

This is an image of photographer Irving Penn's Studio in Paris, 1950, when Penn was 33 years-old. There, as well as in London and New York, he took a series of photos of working people of all kinds (firefighters, a milkman, dance instructors, seamstresses, etc.). 252 of them are on display through January 10th in a show called Irving Penn: Small Trades at the Getty in Los Angeles.
