Just the Essentials

.
At far right, fashion illustrator Antonio Lopez

Jacques de Bascher, and Karl Lagerfeld.

Today Rizzoli releases Antonio: Fashion, Art, Sex and Disco, by Roger Padilha and Mauricio Padilha of MAO Mag (including contributions by Bill Cunningham, Anna Sui, and Andre Leon Talley). The book focuses not only on Lopez's illustrations but also showcases his photographs, for which he is less well known.

A show at the Suzanne Geiss Company gallery in NYC, covering three decades of Lopez's career and sounding chock-full of interesting gems (including 8-millimeter films shot by Lopez), opens on September 7 (more info here).

Below, some of Lopez's earlier illustrations.

Rx

Also tonight—CMRTYZ presents:
Cassie Ramone (Vivian Girls, The Babies) is installing an aisle of Walgreen's - not a realistic, actual aisle, but rather a "super-aisle" filled with products sold at big-name drugstores that she's attracted to. So far, items for inspiration are: boxes of hair dye, waxing/hair removal products, fake nails/eyelashes, Hanes t-shirts and underwear, condoms, cosmetics aisle items such as lipstick and nail polish, chapstick, the magazine rack, Ziploc bags, As Seen On TV products, fungal cream, wrist braces, and surely there will be many more to come. Thick lines on the wall to represent "shelves" and on pricing- the pieces will be determined by moving the decimal point on the actual product over one (if a box of hair dye is $8.99 the piece will be $89).
Plus: after party with The Pharmacy, Cassie Ramone, TacocaT, Battle Stations. More info and additional greatness at CMRTYZ.

I Like the Night Life, Baby

Artwork for the Cars' second album, Candy-O, by Alberto Vargas, the Peruvian-born artist who painted classic pin-up girls for Esquire and Playboy from the '40s through the '70s.

I'm breaking our no-weekend-posting rule because a song by The Cars is stuck in my head right now (I have no idea why) and I feel compelled to share:

The Cars "Let's Go" from Candy-O (1979, Elektra)

One time I was in Montreal on a press-check for the magazine I was working for at the time (that's where you go to the printer and look at proofs, and basically watch the magazine start to go through the press to make sure the color comes out right).

[+] Ink and gigantic spools of blank paper

[+] Magazine pages transferred into film; printed pages going through the press

I was there for a couple days and then stayed for the weekend so I could cruise around and buy records. Montreal is always good for records – there's a whole store there that only sells French vinyl (sadly, no Cortex or Sun Palace – two French records that have been on my list forever – but I got a bunch of other stuff I was happy with). Anyway while I was driving around I heard an extended interview on the CBC about the recording of The Cars' first album (self-titled, 1978) and it kind of cemented in my mind that they were a band with great beginnings. They got sucky later and I hated those half-animated videos, but the early stuff is solid.

Anyway, now The Cars remind me of Montreal.

As the Crow Flies

Last Friday I had the chance to check out the amazing Dennis McNett installations in the windows at Barneys Seattle. (Click to enlarge.)

The photos don't fully do them justice but if you have the chance, head downtown and take a closer look.

McNett, who is based in Brooklyn, also did installations in the windows of the New York store this past summer. See more of his work here and check out the Barneys windows through the end of October at 6th and Pine, Seattle.
