Tapes 'n Tapes

.
This month at Complex magazine, Chairman Jefferson Mao counts down the thirty greatest hip-hop demos of all time – including dustily sparkling gems from Lord Finesse, Jay-Z, Tha Alkaholiks (formerly known as ESP: Everyday Street Poets), Hieroglyphics, Eminem, Big L, Brand Nubian, O.C., Mobb Deep (f/k/a Poetical Prophets) Ras Kass, DJ Shadow, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, and Organized Konfusion (f/k/a Simply Too Positive), Nas, and Public Enemy. The list includes sound clips and Mao's ridiculously well-informed commentary – a must-read for fans of '90s hip-hop. Click here to check it out.

The Brooklyn Bridge

.

Clips from Founding Fathers, a documentary by Ron Lawrence and Hassan Pore – screening tomorrow night as part of the 2nd annual Ego Trip Film Series in New York.

Founding Fathers is particularly noteworthy because it refutes the conventional assertion that hip-hop started in the Bronx. A panel discussion follows the screening, with Hassan Pore, Fab 5 Freddy, The Disco Twins, DJ Lance, and DJ Divine of Infinity Machine. Click here for info.

Bomb Combo

.
The new collab from Jake One and Freeway is in stores this week, and while I understand that everyone is all jazzed up about this new "MP3" technology nowadays, I recommend heading down to ye olde record store and picking up a physical copy of this particular joint. The packaging, by the criminally unheralded underground design legend Brent Rollins, is – well, it's out of control, really, is what it is.
Have a look for yourself:

The vinyl packaging is roughly the same but bigger and inherently superior. More info at rhymesayers.com
