The Kalakala, which operated as a ferry on Puget Sound from 1926–1967. Having been repurposed as a fish processing vessel in Alaska since its retirement, and now residing in Tacoma-WA, the Kalakala has fallen into severe disrepair. It is currently up for sale for $1 or best offer. More info here.

Sunny and Cold

.
More cold-weather crabbing with my brother and friend Josh.

These photos do not really capture how beautiful it was yesterday – the water was fairly calm, the North Cascades were covered with snow and the moon was gigantic in the sky when we headed back at the end of the day....

And this time we got our limit. The rules, in case you don't know: each person can have two crab pots and is allowed to take 5 Dungeness per day, but they have to be male and the shell at least 6.25" wide.

3 people x 5 each = 15 delicious crabbies

Crabbing with my brother last week near Hat Island WA.
(We had two pots down for about an hour and just got three Dungeness, but it's always good times and I have high hopes for Winter crab season.)

Fate Hunter

.
I forgot to post these final photos from our San Juans trip.

On our last day we got in really late and decided we'd just stay the night at the dock in Everett. These are from the next morning, when it was really foggy and cold, and the current was going haywire.

This beautiful sailboat was parked in front of us. The whole thing is just navy blue, white, wood, and stainless steel, and I liked the type on the title, Osprey.

On kind of the other side of the spectrum, this boat is called the White Wind. Do you know how white you'd have to be to name your boat the White Wind?

Eastern Hunter (New Bedford, Mass), sister of Fate Hunter (Astoria, Oregon)

We made coffee at the dock on our small propane stove. Later in the morning Emily fell and dislocated her shoulder. But it was still kind of a fun morning (that aside, obviously).

Pacific Standard Was On Vacation

.
And now we're back. Last week Emily and I took our boat up to the San Juans in an attempt to take a first proper vacation since that massive roadtrip move from New York to Seattle in Fall 2008. If you aren't from here, the San Juans are a chain of 172 islands in the Salish Sea.

Kind of a weird trip in that we got stuck on Lopez for three days with engine trouble (I know, rough life... but not what we had planned).

Still, the weather was perfect and we made it out to Jones and Stuart Islands for two nights at the end of the week. And:

ORCA WHALES!

Here are some other pics:

On Jones we met these people from Bellingham who had the same model of boat as us (1980 Boston Whaler Revenge). It's kind of a rarity so it was cool to talk to them about modifications they had made, etc. Yes, we're becoming boat people.

When I was younger I wanted to pilot one of these small ferries. Oh well.

The San Juans have the best tide pools of anywhere I've been.

More cool modern houses on Stuart. I used to kayak by these all the time – the fronts flip down and you can walk out on them.

A good vacation message

I'm sorry to report that on the last day – literally, when we got back to Everett and were getting ready to put the boat back in – we were trying to dock in a fast current and Emily fell in, dislocating her shoulder in the process.

Still, setting that and the engine trouble aside, it was a phenomenal trip.
