Impresarios, Take Note

.
The latest issue of Acne Paper has a great interview with the lovely Cecilia Dean (whose singular aesthetic has long made her one of my few personal style icons).
Cecilia Dean with Baroness, Lady Bunny, and James Kaliardos
at the launch party for
Visionaire 18. Fashion Special,
held at Mr. Chow in NYC (1996).

Here, Cecilia talks about the conception behind, and evolution of, Visionaire's legendary launch parties – and describes how their design and curation has played an important role in the creative life of the multi-format publication she helped found. Having attended a few of these with Strath when we lived in New York, I can attest to the fact that Cecilia throws a fabulous and memorable get-together. Read and learn.

...And as always, much, much more to enjoy between the current (party-themed) issue's covers.

Acne Paper is available at fine newsstands everywhere (in Seattle, check Bulldog News in the U-District).

Artwork by Raymond Pettibon from the new exhibition opening tomorrow at Ambach & Rice, Playboys & Killjoys – featuring works by Pettibon, Sara Greenberger Rafferty, Markus Vater, Erwin Wurm, and Eric Yahnker. From the press release:
What Humor is, not all the tribe
Of logic-mongers can describe.
-Jonathan Swift
...
Playboys & Killjoys derives its title from Harry Levin’s essay on the theory and practice of comedy, dividing comedy’s protagonists in two categories, that of the playboy whom we laugh with and the killjoy whom we laugh at.
Reception Saturday 8/28, 7–9PM / show up through 9/19.

Ambach & Rice.

We recently acquired a boat (pics coming soon). Our friend Josh helped us deliver it to the marina and when we put it in its slip for the first time, these two harbor seals came up to see what we were doing.

A photo by Charles Shabacon from the front cover of another recent Light In The Attic re-release I designed – Gabor Szabo's rare, fuzzy, sitar-infused 1967 LP Jazz Raga.
Here's what that sounds like:

Awkward

.
Also out today:

Sex: Our Bodies, Our Junk – a manual by The Association for the Betterment of Sex, an organization apparently fronted by friend of the blog Mike Sacks and three other writers (from The Onion, Conan, and The Daily Show). As Mike says, "If you’re a fan of sex—or just know someone who is—this is definitely the book for you." Order it up from Amazon.com.

Serge & Jane

Re-issue projects take a long time – I've been working on this one with Light in the Attic Records for several months and it's finally in stores today!

Jane Birkin & Serge Gainsbourg's self-titled 1969 album features the smoldering cut "Je T'Aime...Moi, Non Plus" among many others.

As a bonus, the LP version comes with this re-issue of an extremely rare 45 featuring the title cut from the equally smoldering film Slogan.

Visit lightintheattic.net to listen and buy Jane Birkin & Serge Gainsbourg on CD or hand-numberd, limited gatefold LP.
