Image of the Day

. Sunset's October 1945 cover, from a New York Times article and slideshow about the magazine's history as arbiter of West Coast cooking and living. Like a lot of people out here, I grew up with a stack of Sunset magazines and cookbooks laying around, and a forthcoming new book, The Sunset Cookbook, will collect some of the best recipes from their pages.

That brings back memories from the early 60s. A house at the top of my street in Bellevue, WA, had been featured in Sunset, so when friends and I went trick or treating there, it felt extra exciting. We were in jr high, trying to do one last year. The man at the door said we looked like we were old enough to vote. He did give us candy, though.

Where was the house in Bellevue? I would love to see it.

The Sunset Mexican Food cookbook still rules. I think I need Mexican Food for lunch now....

The house in Sunset Magazine was on 104th Ave SE, at the top of SE 19th St, but a bit down from the corner (on the right if you're driving down 104th) I'm afraid you can't see the house from the street (if it's even still there). I don't know if you can see any of the yard from Killarney Glen Park, further down 104th. I lived on SE 19th St. My dad built our house around 1948. It was the second one built on the street and is one of the last standing (YAY, DAD) from what I can tell. It's dwarfed now. My old address is 10447 SE 19th St, but please don't print that. My dad died in Hospice care in his house in 1992. The same owner has lived there since 1993. Maybe the Sunset house was featured in the late 50s. I know we thought it looked Japanese and Modern.
