Image of the Day

.
Robert Adams, Kerstin Enjoying the Wind,
East of Keota, Colorado, 1969.
As recently reported by Carol Vogel in the NY Times,
Adams has selected 169 prints from his personal
collection, covering the span of his career, for acquisition
by the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.

Two comments:

1. This is the kind of photo that made me pine for the West when we lived on the East Coast.
2. Every time I start thinking about paring down my 7-day subscription to the Times, I get the Friday arts section and change my mind.

From the press release:
Since taking up photography in the mid-1960s as a response to the rapidly changing landscape of his native Colorado, Robert Adams has been widely regarded as one of the leading chroniclers of the American West. Edited and sequenced by Adams himself, The Place We Live surveys a career spanning four decades. This unprecedented retrospective features nearly 300 black-and-white photographic prints as well as a selection of the artist's many important photo books. Adams’s work reflects his extended dedication to describing the changing Western landscape, the growth of its built environment and the lives of its inhabitants.

Western Eyes

Robert Adams: Clearcut, Humbug Mountain, Clatsop County, Oregon, 1999–2001

Astoria, Oregon-based photographer Robert Adams has been awarded the 2009 Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography, being cited by the foundation as "one of the most important and influential photographers of the last forty years."

Robert Adams: Colorado Springs, Colorado, 1968

Past winners include fellow Northwest natives Lee Friedlander and Jeff Wall, Nan Goldin, Bernd & Hilla Becher, William Eggleston, Malick Sidibé, Robert Frank, Richard Avedon, Henri Cartier-Bresson – the list is long and varied and includes almost as many photographers I don't know as ones I do, but judging by the company they're in, I'm looking forward to researching them.
