Fine.

.
The finale of Raf Simons's beautiful, last show for Jil Sander. Such a shame – even if I am interested to see what Jil does when she returns to her namesake.

Cathy Horyn:
The scene at the end of the Jil Sander show — Raf Simons’s last for the house — was moving and spontaneous, and certainly not like anything I’ve experienced in 25 years of covering the industry.

At the end of a remarkable collection that quietly evoked the hours in a couple’s domestic life, from a woman’s morning lingerie to gorgeous wool coats and black cocktail dresses, the audience gave Mr. Simons a standing ovation. He acknowledged the gesture with a smile and wave and then disappeared backstage, which was closed to guests because he wanted to avoid a heavy emotional scene and questions about his departure.

After Mr. Simons ducked out of sight, the audience gathered on the low, rectangular stage and moved toward the backstage entrance, applauding the entire time. The German press section was particularly loud. People stood on the runway and kept applauding for about a minute, and then Mr. Simons came out again, his face streaked with tears.

Just Jil (Milan Wrap-Up Pt. 1)

Really, what is there to say about the Jil Sander show last Friday? Raf Simons transforms minimalism into the highest form of luxury. Perfection.

It's worth checking out video of the runway, courtesy of style.com, to see the sculptural details in the second half of the show come to life. (I'm also pondering the assertion therein by the Washington Post's Robin Givhan that the models' failure to wear the clothes with "any great authority" lent the show a disturbing aspect. To me, the girls look beautiful in the photos, but maybe these are creations that demand a certain amount of life experience to pull off well in person? If that's the case, then I like them even more.)

Reality and Dream

I have mentioned my admiration for Jil Sander a few times previously, and the FW09 show did not disappoint.

I'm sure there will be more on that later from my better half, but for now, here's a good interview with the designer, Raf Simons, by Suzy Menkes of the International Herald Tribune. Along with people like Alber Elbaz, Raf keeps fashion interesting season after season.

White As Diamonds

.

The amount of white space in these new Jil Sander ads is pure luxury.

I'm not positive but I think the photographer is Willy Vanderperre, with art direction by Lloyd & Co. More than with almost any other brand, I'm always excited to see what they will do with the Jil Sander ads each season. The past several campaigns seem to have completely distilled to this logical, brilliant conclusion.

An idea expressed in such a simple, beautiful, minimal way is the exact opposite of information overload everywhere all the time. Honestly, I don't think that could be expressed more perfectly than it is in these photographs.

I wrote a little about the Howard Street Jil Sander store, which does roughly the same thing in architectural/interior form, here.

To Keep You Safe from the Outside World

This is the Jil Sander store on Howard Street in Soho.

A building houses people, and clothing houses a person. These garments are like personal architecture in both shape and construction—the most luxurious feeling, laser-cut fabric, molded into really amazing, unusual structures, while maintaining essentially the same overall shape and purpose of clothing.

The store itself is also an interesting experience. They use mirrors in unexpected places and ways, as if to say "see things differently." It's every bit as interesting as a good gallery show.
